Portuguese Soul Issue 26

SPRING/SUMMER 2024

“That left in a will.” “That which is passed on to those who follow.” “Succession.” “Gift.” “That which past generations pass on to the present ones.” “Inheritance.” There are many definitions for Legacy. All different, but all equal in their legitimacy.

We continue travelling in this edition of Portuguese Soul, resuming the search for our roots, for our very essence, for our legacy. On a journey deep into the origins of our identity, it’s important to remember that the Roman period (218 BC to 411 AD), the Moorish occupation (711–1249 AD), the age of discovery (15th and 16th centuries) and the dictatorship (1926–1974) are periods of enormous importance that have shaped the character of the country itself.

The genesis of our culture, in practical terms, is the result of a multitude of varied influences, from fashion to architecture, from literature to gastronomy, as well as many other aspects of what makes us Portugal. Identifying these influences helps us to understand better the history of a country that has been in existence for eight centuries and which, one day five centuries ago, dared to made itself big and, in that way, reshaped the idea of the world.

In this edition, we place special emphasis on music and give voice to fado, awarded the status of UNESCO intangible heritage, through one of our greatest talents: Carminho. We also delve into the incredible universe of Fernando Pessoa. But we don’t stop there. We invite artisans, designers, and artists to appear on our pages who, without renouncing their heritage, help build a new future every day.
