Long live the king, they say! Or were it not that this figure — now appearing to us as almost mythical — was one of the most influential of his time, lord of land and sea, a step away from God. His iconography was, and still is, among the most widely portrayed, using art — painting — as a means of perpetuation.
The kingdom, the subjects, the wars they waged were not enough… to each king, his faithful portrait, capturing the different stages of his life.
