Music, film, and architecture in your ears
Words: Maria Martinho
Mariana Oliveira is the Molly who gives her name and talent to the Molly Moks brand of earrings. She draws inspiration from music, cinema, and architecture to create geometric, colourful accessories full of personality.
When Mariana Oliveira realised in 2017 that the Portuguese market did not have earrings she liked, she tried to make some herself, which was a success. “The purpose has always been simple: to make earrings that are more than accessories; they are forms of expression. Earrings with their own identity, which those who see them recognise”, she says.
‘Earrings to dazzle amidst the hustle and bustle of life’ was the slogan chosen to introduce the brand to the world and capture the attention and hearts of men and women who are not afraid of colour, difference and exclusivity in accessories.
Fascinated by contrasts, Mariana Oliveira draws inspirations from film and music, but also from architecture and artists such as Kandinsky and Malevich. The first collection, ‘Muses’, is inspired by the 1960s-1980s and iconic figures from the arts, from Marilyn Monroe to Brigitte Bardot. ‘Signs’ was based on astrology and, more recently, ‘Spice’ was launched, based on the 2000s.
Mariana works with stainless steel, epoxy, and a touch of glitter whenever possible to create lightweight, comfortable earrings designed to be worn all day without discomfort. “They are pieces of art you can wear that go beyond the obvious”, she adds.
Transforming looks with colourful, geometric earrings available in various sizes, Molly Moks suggest unlikely combinations and bold, daring and unique personalities.
“In the future, I want to strengthen the ‘Mokers’ community with special gatherings and experiences, such as ‘Build Your Own Moks’ workshops. Beyond that, I dream of taking Molly Moks first to Spain and then to other European markets”. Until then, you can find all her work at: mollymoks.pt.
