Portuguese Soul 31 — Saudade

AUTUMN/WINTER 2026

There are words that belong to a place, to a culture, to a way of seeing the world. Saudade is one of them. It cannot truly be translated; it must be felt. It is a feeling woven from memory and longing, from absence and presence. It is the echo of what was once good, and the quiet desire to feel it again.

We feel saudade for the good times. Not because the past was perfect, but because it held space to breathe. Time for unhurried conversations, for meetings that needed no schedule, for laughter unconfined by deadlines and demands.

There is saudade for friends and for simple togetherness. For tables that stretched deep into the night, for stories retold without haste, for bonds that formed effortlessly. Moments when no one glanced at the clock, because everything that mattered was already there.

Today, we often live surrounded by urgency. Everything must happen quickly, everything must be immediate. Between notifications, commitments, and constant pressure, we forget that life was never meant to be only a race.

Perhaps that is why saudade is also a form of resistance. A quiet reminder that other rhythms exist. Rhythms where quality matters more than quantity, and where time itself holds meaning.

We feel saudade for things well-made. For respect toward materials, for care in every detail, for the patience required to turn knowledge into craft. True mastery is born precisely there: in the meeting of tradition, experience, and pride in one’s work.

Portugal has always lived deeply from this inheritance. From hands that learned from other hands, from techniques passed down through generations, from the conviction that doing something well is always the best way to do it.

And perhaps that is what saudade reminds us, day after day: that the future is also built when we know how to preserve what truly matters: time, people, traditions, and the beauty of things made with soul. Our soul.
